Acting, stagecraft, make-up and costumes—we have a full dramatic arts program!
Intro To Theater: This course is designed to introduce the world of theatre arts for the non-magnet Roosevelt High student. Students will work on building their self-confidence and self-esteem through improvisational games and exercises and learn the basic aspects of oral presentation in the form of rehearsed scenes and monologues. The basic aspects of technical theatre as well as studies in reading, writing, and critical analysis of theatre will also be stressed.
Prerequisite: None – you can take this class and not be in the magnet. This one-year course counts for the A-G Visual and Performing Arts Requirement, FUSD Fine Arts Requirement, and/or Elective Credit.
Theater I:
This is the first class for those students who want to pursue theatre arts for their magnet pathway whether or not they have had previous theatrical experience. This course will touch on all the different aspects of theatre to include improvisation, pantomime, scenes, monologues, acting exercises, theatrical history and criticism. The class performs several times each year and culminates with the students performing in a one-act play directed in class by the 4th year theatre seniors.
Prerequisite: You must be in the magnet Program to take this class. This one-year course counts for the A-G Visual and Performing Arts Requirement, FUSD Fine Arts Requirement, and/or Elective Credit.
Acting Basics: A course geared to the intermediate actor, focusing on a more in-depth study of theatre exercises and styles, audition techniques, improvisation, monologue, and scene work. Units include puppetry, melodrama, and make up.
Prerequisite: Theatre 1 or Introduction to Theatre, or one year of theatre at another high school, or by instructor permission. You must be in the magnet program to take this class. This one-year course counts for the A-G Visual and Performing Arts Requirement, FUSD Fine Arts Requirement, and/or Elective Credit.
Acting Styles:
This third year advanced class is a continuation of the student’s acting skills together with advanced interpretation and criticism based on the historical study of the style of acting from the framework major periods of theatre.
Prerequisite: Theatre 1, Acting Basics, or two years of theatre at another high school, or instructor permission. You must be in the Magnet to take this class. This one-year course counts for the A-G Visual and Performing Arts Requirement, FUSD Fine Arts Requirement, and/or Elective Credit.
Showcase Directing:
This course is the culmination of all the skills and knowledge of the fourth year theatre student. Besides the continuation of the students acting skills, this course also preps the student in all the technical sides of play direction to include set, light, costume and sound design, stage management, and helps to develop the directing skills needed to direct a one-act play. By the end of the year, each student will be responsible for directing their own one-act play.
